Dutch beet campaign has been completed
The Dutch sugar beet campaign has been completed. The last beet to the sugar factory in Hoogkerk (Groningen) was delivered on Friday 14 January, while the last shipment of sugar beet to the factory in Dinteloord was delivered on Wednesday 12 January. Together, the two factories processed more than 6,880,000 tonnes of beet during this campaign period.
In the past three months, many Limburg sugar beets were delivered by ship to the sugar factory in Dinteloord. Eight ships sailed back and forth between Maastricht and Dinteloord. Some figures:
- The ships carried 261,100 tonnes of beet in 206 voyages;
- This amounted to approximately 44,000 tonnes of sugar;
- Using ships for this transhipment meant that about 15,000 trips by truck could be avoided.
This amounted to a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions, which is not only good for the environment but also had a positive impact on road traffic.
German campaign still ongoing
Our factory in Anklam, Germany, is currently still processing the last of the sugar beet. The German harvest was exceptionally good this year. The expected yield was 76 tonnes of sugar beet per hectare, but it turned out to be around 80 tonnes per hectare. It is expected that beet processing in Germany will continue until the beginning of February.
