Appeals Tribunal decision: Commercial linking wrinkles to sugar was misleading
A television commercial by the Douglas perfumery chain linking wrinkles to sugar was misleading and dishonest, according to the Advertising Code Committee (RCC) and the Appeals Tribunal (CvB). We had lodged an objection against the advert with the RCC. “We think it is important that information about sugar is correct and backed up by science. Claiming that sugar causes wrinkles is totally unfounded,” said our CEO, Paul Mesters.
The TV commercial was for a moisturiser sold under the Dermacosmetics label, an exclusive brand marketed by Douglas.
Irrevocable decision
On 9 June 2020, the RCC decided the commercial was misleading. Douglas appealed to the CvB to have the decision overturned. On 13 October 2020, however, the CvB agreed with the RCC’s decision: Douglas’s commercial was baseless and misleading. The decision is now irrevocable. There is no evidence that sugar causes wrinkles and not a single independent advisory body agrees with Douglas’s claim.
“There is no evidence that sugar causes wrinkles and not a single independent advisory body agrees with Douglas’s claim. It is important to us that sugar enjoys the appreciation it deserves as a delicious natural product that should be consumed in moderation,” added Mesters.
