Cosun Solar Park Puttershoek: 20 megawatts of sustainable energy

Suiker Unie, like Cosun its parent company, has huge sustainability ambitions. It is aiming to be the world’s greenest, most innovative and most successful sugar beet processor in the world. It also recognises its responsibility to pre

serve nature and to care for the environment, people and society in the interests of future generations. Paul Mesters, Suiker Unie’s CEO, says, “Eventually we want to be completely free of all fossil fuels. We are already using 50% less energy to produce a kilo of sugar than we did in 1990. This is thanks mainly to our energy saving programmes and our production of green gas from sugar beet remains. We are now taking a good step towards becoming completely CO₂ neutral, beginning with the sugar specialities factory in Puttershoek.”

Cosun Solar Park Puttershoek will be completed this year by KiesZon, part of green energy supplier Greenchoice, and will cover an area of 17 hectares. KiesZon’s managing director, Erik Snijders, is pleased about the confidence Suiker Unie has placed in his company. “This partnership with Suiker Unie is one to be proud of. Cosun Solar Park Puttershoek will generate at least 20,000,000 kWh of green electricity for Suiker Unie every year. That is enough green electricity to power 7,000 households for a whole year. The figures on CO₂ emissions are just as impressive. Realising the solar park in Puttershoek will cut the carbon footprint by no less than 12 million kilograms.
