Lean & Green Star for transport using our own green gas
Cosun Beet Company has been awarded a Lean & Green Star in recognition of the substantial reduction in its CO₂ emissions. The reduction has been achieved by transporting bulk sugar using green gas produced entirely by the company itself. Christian Blom and Ad Jansen from the logistics department accepted the Lean & Green Star on behalf of Cosun Beet Company.
Lean & Green is the market leader in CO₂ reduction programmes for the logistics sector. With sustainable measures and best practices it helps businesses cut their CO₂ emissions and costs.
The Lean & Green programme consists of three steps. The first is to draw up a plan that describes how a business in the logistics chain can reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 20% in five years. Cosun Beet Company has already received a Lean & Green Award for its plan. One of its priorities was to use the green gas the company itself produces to deliver bulk sugar in the Netherlands.
The second Lean & Green step is to actually cut CO₂ emissions by 20%, with a Lean & Green Star as a reward. Cosun Beet Company has now completed this step, with its current truck fleet running on green gas produced entirely by the company. We began operating gas-powered trucks in 2018; today, 18 of our 50 trucks drive on our own green gas.
Second Star
To be awarded a second star, we have to cut our carbon footprint by a further 10% in cooperation with other parties in the logistics chain. Cosun Beet Company is planning to earn its second star in 2021. Its truck fleet is being expanded with 100% green gas engines and agreements have been made with transporters, truck manufacturers and customers.
